PaperCut MF vs PaperCut NG

PaperCut is an extremely valuable print management software application designed for both scalability and flexibility that helps you minimize print waste, save print supplies, improve document security and encourage improvements in printing behavior within your organization.

PaperCut offers two editions of their software solution: MF and NG. Both versions do share many of the same primary features, including nearly 98 percent of the same code base. However, there are a few key differences between PaperCut MF and NG that you should know about before choosing which one is right for you.

Here is a quick run-down of the key differentiators between PaperCut MF and PaperCut NG:

1. PaperCut Edition Names

Chris Dance, CEO and co-founder of PaperCut, is proud of coming up with a unique and popular name for his company. However, the coders at PaperCut were much less creative. They selected the names “NG” and “MF” which stands for “Next Generation” and “Multi-Function” respectively. At least it makes it easy to remember!

2. Device-Level Management Abilities

With PaperCut MF, you can track and control copy, print, fax, and scan on any of your office’s multifunctional devices. PaperCut MF essentially extends the functionality of PaperCut NG with a higher level of hardware integration. With embedded software, PaperCut MF can be installed on most leading devices.

3. PaperCut NG and MF Licensing Requirements

While you only need a single component license for PaperCut NG, PaperCut MF has additional hardware and software that requires your licensing model to be more customized for your organization.

This means that there is a little extra work involved with PaperCut MF. But if it’s the right program for you, don’t let it scare you off. Also, your managed print service provider can help you with proper licensing in no time.

4. PaperCut MF has Interface Capabilities

One of the most significant differences is that MF can interface with hardware devices. This allows it to deliver a multitude of extra features including network card readers that facilitate secure print release, integration with third-party copier terminals, and embedded software that runs on a copier or multi-function device that tracks and controls access on the device.

All other features are similar on PaperCut NG and PaperCut MF including general print tracking, rules-based printing, driverless web print. While they are both very similar, NG is a print solution that is easy-to-use and cost-effective while MF offers all of the same features as NG with even more fantastic capabilities.
